TL;DR: When you choose "Start with a template" during installation, monday.com creates a ready-made board with all the recommended columns for Outlook Calendar sync. It's the fastest way to get started — and it keeps your existing boards untouched while you test.
Start with a template
What the template includes
The template board comes pre-built with all the columns you need for a full calendar sync:
Meeting Name (Item Name) → maps to Event Title
Date (Date column) → maps to Event Date
Time (Hour column) → maps to Event Start Time
Duration (Number column) → maps to Event Duration
Location (Text column) → maps to Event Location
Description (Long Text column) → maps to Event Body
Attendees (Text column) → maps to Event Attendees
These are the same columns covered in Board Setup Best Practices — the template just sets them up for you automatically.
Template Board
How to use the template
During installation, when you see the "Let's get started" screen, click Start with a template
Click Add app — monday.com creates a new board with all the columns above
Yes — try the app without touching your primary boards
No — changes sync to your real calendar and board
Our recommendation: Start with the template to learn how the sync works, then add the app to your real boards once you're comfortable. You can always delete the template board later.
Customizing the template
The template board is a regular monday.com board — you can customize it however you want:
Rename columns to match your workflow
Add columns for additional fields you want to sync
Remove columns you don't need (the sync only maps what you configure)
Add groups to organize meetings by type, team, or project
Changes to columns won't break anything — the sync only uses the columns you explicitly map during field mapping.
Next step
Connect your Outlook account and create your first sync.
