One recipe auto-links items between boards and keeps every matching column synced bidirectionally — change a value on either board and the other updates automatically. The top-2 most-used recipes in the app both live in this category. Works item-to-item, item-to-subitem, subitem-to-item, and subitem-to-subitem.

What makes this unique

This isn't just another connection recipe — it's a complete cross-board sync solution in a single step. The two-way sync recipes combine:
    Auto connection — items (or subitems) are automatically linked between boards based on your matching rules.
    Continuous sync — once connected, every column with the same name and type stays synchronized across both boards, automatically, in both directions.
It's the only Connected Boards Automations pattern that handles all four entity combinations:
  • Item → Item
  • Item → Subitem
  • Subitem → Item
  • Subitem → Subitem

When to use it

  • You want two boards to act as one — every change on either side propagates to the other
  • A new item or subitem should connect automatically based on shared data (Client ID, Project Name, Ticket #)
  • You want true bidirectional sync between boards — monday has no native cross-board sync (Mirror columns only display the value, they can't be edited or written back to)

Before you start

  • A Connect Boards column on this board, configured to point at the target board — see  Setting Up Connect Columns for Connect & Sync Automations⁠ 
  • A "matching key" column on each board (e.g. Email, SKU, Client ID, Project Name)
  • Columns you want to sync must exist on both boards with the same name and type

Featured how-to

Common gotchas

  • "Same name AND type" is strict. A Text column won't sync with a Long Text column even if both are called "Notes". Align columns first.
  • Bidirectional sync means both boards can overwrite. Whoever edits last wins. If one board is the source of truth, use a one-way sync recipe instead.
  • Only applies to items created/changed after setup. Existing items aren't retroactively connected.
  • The connect column must exist before the recipe runs. Add it in advance — see Setting Up Connect Columns above.
