Setting Up Connect Columns for Connect & Sync Automations

What this article is about:
Before setting up your Connect & Sync automation, you need a Connect Boards column linking the two boards.
The setup depends on what you’re connecting:
  • Items to items   
  • Subitems (on the automation board) to items (on connected board)   
  • Items (on the automation board) to subitems (on connected board)   
  • Subitems to Subitems   
We’ll guide you through the 4 possible cases below.

1. Connect Item  Item

When to use:
Use this setup when you want to connect items between two boards (e.g., Projects  Clients).
Steps:
    Go to the board where you’ll set the automation.
    Add a new Connect Boards column at the item level.
    Select the board you want to connect to.
    Enable “2-way connection.”
    (Optional) Rename the column to something meaningful like “Client Link.”
    Set up the  "Connect & Sync" automation  using the connect column

2. Connect Subitem  Item

When to use:
When you’re connecting subitems (like detailed tasks) to main items on another board.
Steps:
    Open the board where you’ll set the automation.
    Click into Subitems, then add a Connect Boards column at the subitem level.
    In the column settings, choose the board you want to connect to.
    Enable “2-way sync.”
    (Optional) Rename the column to something meaningful like “Client Link.”

3. Connect Item  Subitem

When to use:
When you’re connecting high-level items to subitems on another board (e.g., Projects board items → Department board subitems).
Steps:
    Go to the target board (the board you’re connecting to, not where the automation runs).
    Add a Connect Boards column.
    Choose the board where the automation will be set.
    Enable “2-way sync.”
    (Optional) Rename the column to something meaningful like “Project Link.”
    Set up the  "Connect & Sync" automation  using the connect column that was generated when you enables 2 way sync.

4. Connect Subitem  Subitem

When to use:
When you’re connecting subitems from one board to subitems in another board (e.g., Team A subitems  Team B subitems).
Steps:
    Go to the board where you’ll set the automation.
    In the Subitems view, add a Connect Boards column.
    Choose the board whose subitems you want to connect to.
    Enable “2-way sync.”
    Then go to the other board, open its Subitems, and click “+ Add column → Copy parent columns.”
    Select the connect column that was just created from the first board.
    Set up the  "Connect & Sync" automation  using the connect column that was generated when you enables 2 way sync. In the automation setting page, choose subitems on both fields.
